Should I get multiple HVAC quotes

Absolutely yes - getting multiple HVAC quotes is one of the smartest decisions you can make. Most homeowners should get 3-4 quotes for any major HVAC project like furnace replacement, AC installation, or heat pump systems.

Why multiple quotes matter: HVAC pricing can vary significantly between contractors - sometimes by thousands of dollars for the same job. More importantly, you'll get different perspectives on equipment recommendations, installation approaches, and warranty options. Some contractors might suggest a basic efficiency furnace while others recommend high-efficiency models with better long-term savings. Each quote helps you understand what's truly necessary versus what's optional.

What to compare beyond price: Look at the equipment brands and models being quoted, warranty terms, and what's included in the installation. A lower quote might exclude important items like permits, electrical work, or ductwork modifications. Pay attention to each contractor's licensing (ensure they're TSSA licensed for gas work), insurance coverage, and customer reviews. The cheapest quote often isn't the best value if it means lower quality equipment or installation shortcuts.

In Ottawa's market, reputable HVAC contractors typically provide detailed written estimates within a few hundred dollars of each other for similar equipment. Be wary of quotes that are dramatically higher or lower than others - there's usually a reason. TSSA licensing is mandatory for gas appliance work in Ontario, so verify this with every contractor you're considering.

Red flags to watch for: Avoid contractors who demand payment upfront, pressure you to sign immediately, or can't provide proof of licensing and insurance. Door-to-door sales tactics are also concerning in the HVAC industry.
